Initial questions

I am at a new point in my career so I have many questions going through my head. I am going thought the transition from performer to teacher. I have taught Saturday school dance classes for many years now and my classes have always been successful  but obviously I still have things to learn and want me and my classes to be. The best they can be.

My overall general question I am thinking of looking at is:

What makes a successful/good dance teacher?

It is quite a generic question however I feel it opens lots of windows such as student teacher relationships, standard of choreography, previous professional performance experience my list could go on and on!

Thoughts please

:)

  1. Sounds good to me, think this will benefit you a lot if you want to go into teaching. Will be interesting to read this as its the field I want to go into. It will allow you to interact with both students and teachers and get wider perspective and hopefully the information gained will develop your skills as a teacher!

  2. Hi Lee,
That question has got to be the million dollar one, hasn't it!
I've been teaching now for over 15years now and I'm still not sure what my answer would be as the process of being a teacher is constantly changing and the expectations or requirements of teaching can be very different from one another depending on the situation. I'll be really interested to see how and where this research takes you.

  3. I am thinking the exact same question lee. I feel like its really broad though and I am trying to think how I can be more specific but that is the question I want to research because I feel like it will be so beneficial for we're I am aiming with my career now.

I have just blogged a little problem I feel has occurred. Have a look if you can. I don't know about you but I don't have a lot of teaching at the minute, mostly non as I am just starting out. I was wondering if fr a couple of weeks until my teaching gets up and running

  4. I could take the approach of lots of observing and speaking to more experinced teachers to help with my inquiry.

  5. Hi Lee and Chelsie, It seems that we are all at the same stage in our careers, wanting to branch out into Teaching, I'm finding it all a bit confusing and daunting at the moment and keep changing my mind about my topic, but I do want to be a good teacher and that is what's keeping me positive about my inquiry choice. The Dance Teachers SIG set up by Clare, is going to be a great source of help and information for us as it gives us access to established Teachers. Lee, I think your question is the question we all ask ourselves and is a great topic to research. I'm thinking of looking at Motivation and how to motivate students of differing abilities in dance, I think that this is interlinked with being a good teacher. Thanks for setting up a SIG on faebook I have joined and look forward to sharing thoughts and ideas:)
Would appreciate any thoughts you may have on my topic if you get the chance to read my blog. Betty xx

  6. This is a really good question that will really help you and many others who ask this question. But maybe if you add another smaller question alongside it, that will coincide with the search of your knowledge within your chosen field? (successful teacher) And help broaden your ideas, and give some more chances to bounce off different views and opinions and give some more depth...?
